At orientation, you’ll pick up your IRS Training & Tax Preparation Guides. These books are an invaluable aide to your learning about taxes and properly preparing tax returns for taxpayers. You’ll get to take these books home and we’ll keep extras on site for your use during tax season.
If you won’t be preparing tax returns, you still need to come to orientation. We will review the process by which taxpayers sign up for our service and walk through the process of having a tax return prepared (greeting, examining documents, guiding the taxpayer to the return volunteer, assisting with getting tax printouts to the return volunteer, and guiding the taxpayer to the quality reviewer).
You will also get to see the TaxWise software that we use to prepare tax returns. This software helps us avoid mistakes and makes the process much quicker than calculating tax returns by hand.
There are always changes in tax law each year, and this year is no different. We’ll have several “mini-trainings” throughout tax season to cover these changes and other issues that come up during tax season. For example, we want to make sure that seniors are told about the senior circuit breaker (a state tax credit), that returns for taxpayers with young children and reviewed for the Child Tax Credit, and that all returns are checked to see if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Your understanding of these various credits will make it easier for us to ensure that everyone who qualifies gets all the credits they deserve.
We come together as individuals and become a team during tax season, so orientation is a first step in meeting and getting to know one another. I look forward to seeing you!
