Are You Considered Low Income?

Are You a Low Wage Earner?

What does that mean? How low is “low?” Why is it important?

If you work (earn wages) but don’t make much money, you’re a low-wage earner. We can prepare taxes for most people whose income is less than $50,000. We do not prepare tax returns for small businesses owners (Schedule C), but can prepare returns for those who have a very simple business (Schedule C-EZ).

It’s important to know if you are considered low-income for two reasons.

How Do I Know if I Qualify for the EITC?

Calculating the EITC refund isn’t exactly easy for individuals not trained in preparing taxes. But it is fairly easy to figure out if you qualify for the EITC. The Malden Tax Partnership has prepared a chart to help you figure it out. We’ll even help you determine if you qualify and prepare your tax return so you get all the refund you deserve—at no charge!

Get Your Taxes Done by Trained Preparers for Free!

Why spend part of your tax return getting your taxes done when you can get it done for free? All the people preparing tax returns with the Malden Tax Coalition are volunteers who are trained by the IRS. This is for low-income residents only. It is part of the IRS’s effort to make sure that low-income residents get all of their tax return and don’t have to spend part of the return to get their taxes prepared.

Remember, almost all low-income residents can get their taxes prepared by usWe’ll automatically check to see if you qualify for the EITC as well. Some tax returns for low-income residents may be more complicated than we can handle, but the Bentley College Low-Income Tax Clinic is one of our Coalition members. They will be able to handle any complicated returns and their services are also free.

When and Where Can I Get My Taxes Prepared?

From January through April 2009, the Malden Tax Partnership will prepare taxes for low-income residents at the Cyber CafĂ© @ Malden Square. Taxes will be prepared by scheduled appointment only, so you’ll have to call 1-866-833-2823 after January 15 to schedule an appointment. NO WALK-INS! Taxes will be prepared during the day, in early evenings, and on Saturdays.

Daytimes: appointments available on Mondays & Wednesdays

Evenings: Wednesdays & Thursdays, 5:30 - 8:00 PM

Saturdays: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
